This is a rare find, fresh from an estate in MA. A cdv photo of John Wilkes Booth with his autograph and Boston Mass (uses long s), I believe this to be circa 1865 (please see below as he stayed at the Omni in Boston just 10 days before the infamous assassination of Abraham Lincoln). A civil war era photo album in nice condition! , red leather, 5″ x 4″ x 2 5/8, all page ends are gold gilt with embossed design, porcelain (I think) circular decorations on the front & back (4 on each) and one on the clasp (which works), also an embossed rose design on both covers, also the photos are identified on the last page, not all the photos, but some including Booth. 25 photos in the album + Booth + an advertisement. One of the photos is of a lady holding a pug dog. Some of the names identified: Zola Sanborn , ? Heber WIlkins, Belle Wilkins, Martha Davis, Katie Sanborn, Allen Rich or Rick, Hallie Batchelder , Carrie Patter? Russel Sanborn, Joe McFarlane, J Mclain , D. Parker, Wilkes Booth, Abner Sanborn. In 1863, after John Wilkes Booth. Made a small fortune as a popular stage actor, he bought property in the newly created Back Bay neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. Intending to build a house on the lot. Although Booth was a national star, he was especially popular in Boston, a city he loved for its charm and culture, and had performed in numerous plays at the local playhouse, the Boston Museum. However, find out about them. 5,6,7 or 9 (any one of them) on the north side of Commonwealth Avenue. Attend to this, dear Joe. Let Orlando see this. Advise with him about it. I dont care about the lots on Marlborough St. So if you miss Commonwealth Ave, strike light on the first. John Wilkes Booth photographed in a Boston studio. The house Booth planned to build never came to fruition, probably due to a bad oil investment he made in Pennsylvania in 1864 that seriously depleted his fortune. Since Booth never built his house in Boston, he stayed at the Omni Parker House hotel the last time he visited the city, on April 5 and 6 of 1865, just ten days before he killed Abraham Lincoln. And was seen practicing shooting his pistol at a nearby shooting gallery on the corner of Chapman and School streets. The building was eventually subdivided into apartments after the 1970s. The building is currently up for sale. In a strange coincidence, Booths nemesis, Abraham Lincoln also had connections to Massachusetts. When it was later discovered that he descended from colonists who settled in Massachusetts in the 17th century. Even stranger, the man who later killed Booth, Boston Corbett, also had connections to Boston after he moved there in the 1850s, had a religious conversion there and changed his name from Thomas to Boston in honor of the city.
