A circa 1885 cabinet card of James Hope, American painter and Captain in the 2nd Vermont Infantry. Following a disabling illness, Hope served his regiment as a scout and mapmaker. His eyewitness sketches of the Battle of Antietam were the basis for five large paintings he completed following the Civil War. The last twenty years of his life were spent in Watkins Glen, New York, where this photo was taken by his son. It was found in an album along with a newspaper clipping of Captain Hope’s 1892 obituary. The print is albumen and has good clarity and contrast. There is a slight mark across Hope’s forehead.
