Rare Cabinet Photo Of CIVIL War Ship The Wabash Boston Harbor By James Black

RARE CABINET PHOTO OF THE U. This is one of the most historic American Civil War battleships in History. The Wabash would go onto serving many more years before being retired. Here she is parked in the Boston Harbor and Black has captured superb details from a stern and port angle. Note her guns are still employed. A truly magnificent cabinet photo for any collector of Naval Civil War imagery. The entire history of The U. Wabash can be viewed online where Wiki has a very similar image of the battleship on their page. FOOTNOTE: In 1860 Black opened his own studio in Boston. He would be the 1st American to shoot an aerial photo from a hot air balloon in 1860 which would later lead to the use of aerial surveillance photography during the Civil War. The Union Army would go onto using this method to spy on the Confederate troops in Virginia. One of Black’s aerial photos is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and shows some of the same parts of the Boston Harbor you can see in this photo. Good luck winning this extraordinary cabinet photo. CONDITION: Please view my detailed scan for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. The image is wonderfully posed, contains very nice contrast, tonal range and sharpness. The details in this image are simply spectacular! There is a small stable crease seen in the upper part of the photo, but does not effect the overall quality of the image. There are some stains, a few minor stains, but overall this view by a noted Boston iconic photographer is in excellent antique condition. A rare Naval image of a legendary Civil War hero. Antique GEM PHOTO ALBUM w 5 CIVIL WAR SOLDIER CDV s Wheeler Palmer Mead Gillett (Gillette) Family of Greenwich / Stonington, Connecticut; circa 1860s. ALSO includes ID bracelet from soldier who was also in the family I believe it belonged to Noyes Denison Wheeler, the initials on it are N. Wheeler – whom I found online to have been a resident of New York. He wrote a letter to the editor of the Garrison’s Liberator paper on Jul 20, 1863 about witnessing a lynching of some African-Americans in the city during a week of terror. It was signed Noyes Wheeler. WONDERFUL estate item from the family estate. I also have 3 other family albums (that I will be listing separately) from the same estate that has more photos of the family and document the names. These families intermarried; they were some of the original founding families of Connecticut whose history goes back to the Mayflower immigrants from England. According to my research, one member of the Mead family actually went to fight on the Confederate side! One photo is a Civil War Cavalry officer; multiple photos of William Mead (in uniform and in civilian clothing); and two other Union soldiers in uniform Connecticut (and possibly Maine, Massachusetts regiments). Also photographs of their wives and siblings are in the album. There are 38 CDV’s and 2 tintypes in the album. The backs of the photos have studio photographers’ logo from CT, NY, NJ, and Maine. The album and photos are in EXCELLENT condition; only blemish is a bit of separation on inside of binding to 1 page, but nothing serious and does not affect the covering at all, or the turning of the board pages. Size of album is 6″ x 4 1/2″. There are 40 photos total. Check my other listings for the other albums! By my research I believe this is the Civil War Soldier, WILLIAM MEAD, that was in this family. 1838, Bridgewater, Massachusetts; d. May 14, 1864, Resaca, Gordon County, GA, interred Shockoe Hill Cemetery. “Mead, the son of a prominent minister, enlisted as a Private in Company “C, 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment in Lexington, Virginia on 19 April 1861. In September 1862, in part using the influence of his mother and other respected persons in Richmond and elsewhere, Mead obtained a commission as a 1st Lieutenant in Company “A”, 17th (“Yancey’s”) Alabama Infantry Battalion Sharpshooters (1st Brigade, 1st Division, Army of Mississippi). His superiors described him as efficient and competent. He was killed in action at the Battle of Resaca, while serving under his mother’s cousin, Gen. Joseph Wheeler, and was initially buried on that battlefield. Wheeler wrote to his mother on November 14, 1865: Last year I wrote several letters to Cousin Edward regarding his noble martyred brother who fell while gallantly defending the post of danger at Resaca Geo more than a year since. I saw Willie in the heat of the engagement, and was called to another portion of the line and upon returning found he had been killed during my absence. I immediately made a detail from of [sic] a staff officer and a portion of my escort who carried his body some four miles south of Resaca on the Calhoun road. They then made a rude coffin and interred his body in a gentlemans. Working file of Mary Lou Cook, updated 20 August 2017. After the battle I visited the grave the description & location of which I noted down with great accuracy and had several of my staff officers take a copy of the description so that some would certainly be preserved. I have sent for these notes and immediately upon their receipt will write you again. My Cousin Willie had by his real gallantry high culture and intelligence won the esteem & confidence of all his Generals. His remains were in fact recovered, and he was re-interred at Shockoe Hill Cemetery on 2 December 1865. Through the generosity of Mead family members, a government marker was placed at the grave in June 2015. Thanks to Mead family relatives Jim Mead and Leslie Sprott for supplying biographical information. 1863 Large Photograph Albany Civil War Sanitary Fair Fortune-Tellers Booth

1863 Large Photograph Albany Civil War Sanitary Fair Fortune-Tellers Booth

This original 1863 photograph depicts seven people dressed in costumes at the Albany Sanitary Fairs Fortune Teller booth. The photo was taken by Churchill & Denisons Photographic Establishment of Albany, NY. There were booths for nationalities, like England, Japan, and Russia, as well as a Curiosity Shop, a Shaker booth, and of course, a Gypsy tent, which is where this photo was taken. Photo measures approximately 8 ΒΌ x 6 1/8 on a 9 3/8 x 7 3/8 mount. Unusual in this format, usually one encounters the CDV format for these Sanitary Fair tableau photos. Inked notes on the verso and on a separate sheet of paper identify the sitters of the photo. The notes also indicate that this photo once belonged to Cuyler Reynolds, the former Albany city historian and son of Dexter Reynolds and Catherine Cuyler (pictured seated on the right). Cuyler, future wife of Dexter Reynolds; Annie Cuyler Van Vechten, future wife of Dr. John Lefferts; and Cynthia Quackenbush. However, there is one too many females listed, and not enough males for the individuals to be properly identified. Condition: Photo is unevenly trimmed at bottom and right margins, has an oval shadow from when it was previously framed, residue and soil at upper corners from previous mounting (no doubt this image was issued with a a paper mat affixed). Image has good contrast and resolution and with the appropriate mat it would be striking. A note about packing: Check our feedback. We take pride in our excellent packing. We double-box all fragile items to insure their safe journey through the postal system.
